A machine fitted with horizontal drums or barrels on which fibre or wire ropes are wound. Used for hoisting or handling.
Note :
Ship winches are classified according to use, and may be hand or power driven.
Examples are :
- Derrick hoisting winch
- Derrick topping winch
- Derrick slewing winch
- Boat winch
- Towing winch
